Bike skills and safety clinics for kids learning to ride at school
We love these pics sent in from a ByK Mum of her kids taking part in a school bike skills course.
The Bike Ed. program at school is funded through Sporting Schools. The students pay a small fee to make up the gap between the funding and the cost of the program.
They've been running the 'Let's Ride' program with a local, Ben Watkins of Alpine Gravity, coaching. He coaches all year levels and it runs every Wednesday for a term.
The program itself runs for 10 weeks with each child receiving 1 hour per week during class time on Bike Skills and Bike Safety following the Let's Ride program. This then forms part of the Physical Education Curriculum.
"Ben Watkins from Alpine Gravity is fantastic with the children - pitching it perfectly to match their ability and he has a great coaching style that keeps all the kids engaged."
He also incorporates fun skills and activities, like riding up and over planks, around obstacles, figure 8 dodges etc. giving the kids exciting and challenging activities whilst they learn essential skills to take with them on the trails and roads.
"It has been a huge hit with the kids as Ben is a fantastic coach, and the improvements in confidence and bike skills levels that we've seen is terrific."
